Remembering Those Who Served

German Shepherd Korean War Memorial

The German Shepherd Dog in this portrait was owned by 1Lt Joshua L. Booth, U.S.M.C. (K.I.A. 10.17.06, Al Anbar, Iraq) who was killed in Iraq.  Josh and his family were based at Kanehoe Bay Marine Corps Base in Hawaii.  After Joshua’s passing, rather than leaving Roxy behind, the family brought her home to the mainland where she continues to be a beloved family member. K9 Roxy is now a Search and Rescue (SAR) canine and part of a K9 SAR team in Virginia. She serves as a living affirmation of Josh’s life, and like Josh, she lives and works to serve others.

Fairfax Pets on Wheels Portrait Event

Here are a few photos from the Fairfax Pets on Wheels (FPOW) Portrait Event we had last month.  I donate a portion of the proceeds from this event to Fairfax Pets on Wheels.  I’ve written about them before – I used to be a member with my dog, Chica, and it’s a top-knotch organization.  People and their pets visit other people in nursing homes and it’s a win-win for everyone involved.  Anyway, just wanted to share a few images of some of the beautiful pets that volunteer.  (I took more photos that had people in them but I’m only showing the pets in this post.)  Oh, and KC from this post – is a long-time volunteer of FPOW!

Remembering with Sadness and Respect

This German Shepherd Dog named Roxy belonged to 1Lt Joshua L. Booth, U.S.M.C.  Before he left to serve, Josh and his wife visited this wall at the Korean War Memorial in Washington, DC, and she took a picture of her husband here.  On October 17, 2006, Josh was killed in Iraq.  After Joshua’s passing, the family brought Roxy home to the mainland where she continues to be a beloved family member.  She is living with Josh’s uncle, Black Booth, who contacted me and asked if I could take a portrait of Roxy at the same wall that Josh was before he left for Iraq.  That was the inspiration for this image.

Here is a slideshow with images from our session and additional images provided by Josh’s family that were taken in Hawaii where he was stationed.  He adopted Roxy from a local shelter:  http://roxybooth2007.homestead.com/files/index.html

K9 Roxy is now a Search and Rescue (SAR) canine and part of a K9 SAR team in Virginia. She serves as a living affirmation of Josh’s life, and like Josh, she lives and works to serve others.

Sunrise at the Washington Monument

I recently had a sunrise session at the Washington Monument with a wonderful German Shepherd named Rocky.  Rocky was adopted at age 4 from a neglectful household. He was rescued by a neighbor who ultimately found a perfect home for him. Rocky has been with his new family since 2001 and loves his huge back yard, daily walks, and all his canine friends!

This is what it looks like at sunrise in Washington, DC.  Very peaceful.
