Welcome to the PawPrints Photography Blog

Welcome to the blog for PawPrints Photography. We specialize in artistic photography of pets and their people. Please keep coming back to the blog for updates - I'll be posting about interesting people and companies I come across, as well as some of my favorite images from portrait sessions. You can visit our website at: PawPrints Photography Website

I'm Robin Burkett, the owner of PawPrints Photography. Here I am on the right with my wonderful dog, Chica, who was adopted as a puppy from the Fairfax County Animal Shelter. She just turned 15! She is top dog around here. All she has to do is whine or bark and I'm on whatever she needs - usually food :)

Thanks for stopping by - I'm glad you're here!

Olde Towne Pet Resort - Winter Sessions Part 2

‘Tis the season to get behind in blogging while keeping up with the holiday orders.  Thank you for everyone who stops by.  Below are a few of the portraits that we took at our last portrait event of the year at the Olde Towne Pet Resort.  This first dog is owned by someone who plays in a band - so we wanted to incorporate the guitar in some of the images.

This is Freddie, a newly rescued terrier mix who had a ton of energy.  This image was taken at the end of the session.

Meet Abby and Baxter.  They are wonderful bearded collies we’ve photographed before - they even have their own coffee table book.  We didn’t intend on photographing them on this day, but they came in for grooming so I had the idea to do “before” and “after shots”.  So, here they are.  The wonderful grooming was done by Kim Roman at The Olde Towne Pet Resort in Springfield, VA.before/after grooming

I knew Spanky would look great outside so we started inside, then went out into the parking lot to see what we could find.  We ended up with these images.  (He was on a leash the whole time - we retouched it out.)

Fairfax Pets on Wheels Portrait Event

Here are a few photos from the Fairfax Pets on Wheels (FPOW) Portrait Event we had last month.  I donate a portion of the proceeds from this event to Fairfax Pets on Wheels.  I’ve written about them before - I used to be a member with my dog, Chica, and it’s a top-knotch organization.  People and their pets visit other people in nursing homes and it’s a win-win for everyone involved.  Anyway, just wanted to share a few images of some of the beautiful pets that volunteer.  (I took more photos that had people in them but I’m only showing the pets in this post.)  Oh, and KC from this post - is a long-time volunteer of FPOW!

Olde Towne Pet Resort - Winter Portrait Sessions

We love going to the Olde Towne Pet Resort in Springfield, VA.  If you haven’t been there - you should go and take a tour - it’s a state-of-the-art facility built specifically for dogs and cats.  A few times a year, we host portrait events here - below are a few samples from our September event.  We have another event this weekend, November 1 and 2nd.

This is Duffy.  Duffy was such a wonderful and loving dog.  She was very sick when she came to the session, though you wouldn’t know it.  Since then, she has crossed over the rainbow bridge.  We feel so fortunate to have been able to meet her - if only for a short time.  She touched a lot of hearts.Duffy - Border Collie

Here’s Bo and Puck again, they hold the record on being the most mentioned dogs in this blog.  They are always such fun to photograph.  This is just one of the many holiday images they helped us create.Bo and Puck - Bichons

Then there is Bailey and Sherlock.  We’ve had the opportunity to photograph them before and they just keep getting more and more photogenic.  (Bailey is on the left.)Bichon and Shih Tsu mix

This group of dogs (aka “The James Gang”) all live together with wonderful parents.  From left, they are Milo, Daisy, Mae and Jake.  Each of these dogs has their own portrait in their house - this time it was Mae’s turn - that’s her in the inset image.Four dogs

And finally, here’s Treasure.  He’s a samoyed puppy that is a fluff-ball of energy.  You can see how much he’s grown by looking at one of our previous posts featuring puppies and kittens.Samoyed

Preparing for the Holidays!

Wow - it’s been a long time since my last post.  Lots of things going on here - I had friends and family in town over the last two weeks and we spent a week in the Shenandoah mountains.  The fall colors were fantastic!  I’ve got lots to blog about now to catch up with the past sessions so stay tuned for a bunch of new images.

Every year, the holiday preparations start earlier and earlier - I remember when I thought it was too soon to think about Christmas before December 1.  Gone are those days!

Here’s a sneak peak of some of the things we’re working on for the holidays - they include holiday cards (of course), photo gift tags and photo candy bars.  The only problem with the candy bars is that I have to keep a lot of them in stock because I keep eating them!  The model for these products is KC - he is a volunteer with Fairfax Pets on Wheels and we recently had a photo fundraiser for their organization.  Images from that will be posted soon.  Without further ado (had to look this up - it really is ado and not adieu) - here’s KC.KC on gift tags

Sipsie, a well-traveled cat soon to be featured in her very own book

Have you ever seen Fried Green Tomatoes?  The cat I photographed recently, Sipsie, is named for one of the characters in the movie.  Here’s Sipsie’s story as told by her mom:

“Sipsie was rescued from Animal Control in Summerville, SC in 1996 by my best friend, Andrea.  Incidentally, it was the day was supposed to be “destroyed”…they only kept animals for 3 days.  So, my friend Andrea rescued her, nursed her back to health (She was malnourished, mites had eaten through her ears and she was missing a lot of fur), and named her Sipsie (name was from Fried Green Tomatoes).  A nice southern name for a southern kitty.  I adopted her from my friend since her landlord would not let her have animals.  It was love at first sight!  She then became a “military dependant” and has lived in Alamogordo NM, Albuquerque NM, Norfolk VA, San Antonio TX, Frederick MD and now Potomac Falls VA.  In her younger years, Sipsie was quite the social butterfly.  Her best friend used to be a dog from our neighborhood and we called her a “cog” for a while J  Now she’s older and in declining health, but she still loves lots of attention, her scratching post, and treats.”

She was wonderful to photograph and the result of the session will be a coffee table book featuring Sipsie.  Below are some of the images from the session and here’s a link to the book.

Max, Sadie and Jake - Portuguese Water Dog and Bombay Cats

Meet Max, Sadie and Jake.  Max is an exhuberant Portuguese Water Dog and Sadie and Jake are both beautiful Bombay cats.  We had a mixed session with these beautiful animals - by mixed, I mean we created images with Max on-location at the Key Bridge, then came back to the owner’s house to create images with Sadie and Jake in the comfort of their own environment.  The goal of this session was a coffee table book.  These aren’t just ordinary coffee table books - they are custom-designed by the photographer (me), hand-crafted in Italy and are the highest quality.  They are guaranteed for life.  Below are a few images from our session and here is a link to the book design.Max on the stairs in black and whiteMax at the Key BridgeMax at a full runMax at the colored wallcat in the windowJake behind a curtainSadie playing with a string

Fear the Bichon

I’m working on the images from the portrait event this past weekend and I had to take a break to have a little fun.  This is a retouched image of Bo and Puck - both adorable Bichons getting in touch with their inner “Cujo”.

Puppies and Kittens - Oh My!

Who doesn’t love looking at puppies and kittens?  Below are a few images from recent sessions - I absolutely love photographing the young furballs.  Even better, I love being able to see them grow up and capture the various stages they go through.  We’ve created a new program called “Four Seasons” where you’ll get four sessions throughout the year that will highlight the changes in your pet - as well as the changes in the seasons.  We live in a great area for showing the various seasons!  This isn’t only limited to puppies and kittens.  Call us at 703-354-3736 for more information.   Anyway - enough words - here are some pictures . . .

Fall Season and Upcoming Events

Fall is almost here and it’s a great time of year!  The leaves in northern Virginia are scheduled to peak between October 27th and November 4th - it’s a beautiful natural backdrop for outdoor portraits.

Here is a sample from last year and also this year’s ad in the Washingtonian for September.

Our September event is full.  Our next and final event of the year will be November 1 and 2nd.  We are currently scheduling appointments - call 703-354-3736.

Now, get out there with your best friend and enjoy this wonderful weather!

Remembering with Sadness and Respect

This is Roxy Booth.  She was owned by 1Lt Joshua L. Booth, U.S.M.C. (K.I.A. 10.17.06, Al Anbar, Iraq) who was killed in Iraq.  Before he left to serve, he and his wife visited this same wall at the Korean War Memorial in Washington, DC, and she took a picture of her husband here.  That was the inspiration for this image.  Josh’s uncle, Black Booth, has Roxy now and they are both in training for Search and Rescue in Josh’s honor.  Here is a slideshow with images from our session and additional images provided by Josh’s family:  http://roxybooth2007.homestead.com/files/index.html

German Shepherd Roxy

The German Shepherd Dog in this portrait is 1Lt Booth’s family dog named Roxy, from Hawaii, where Josh and his family were based at Kanehoe Bay Marine Corps Base. After Joshua’s passing, rather than leaving Roxy behind, the family brought her home to the mainland where she continues to be a beloved family member. K9 Roxy is now a Search and Rescue (SAR) canine and part of a K9 SAR team in Virginia. She serves as a living affirmation of Josh’s life, and like Josh, she lives and works to serve others.

This portrait of Roxy is being offered to benefit the children of fallen U.S. Marine’s with the proceeds going to the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation.  If you send an e-mail to info@pawprintsphotography.com I can get you the information necessary to purchase this image.
